Suzuki Switches to Green Packaging Material for Sustainability Goals

Suzuki Motors Adopts Biodegradable Polymer in Outboard Motors Packaging

Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced that it is adopting Green Planet, a biodegradable polymer developed by Kaneka Corporation, to replace polystyrene foam in the final packaging of its outboard motors. This move is aimed at reducing environmental impact and reducing the use of plastic in packaging materials. Kaneka Corporation claims that Green Planet is 100% biomass-derived and can decompose in seawater. Suzuki has developed a two-level structure of cardboard shapes to supplement the Green Planet and maintain the same cushioning performance as conventional polystyrene.

The Suzuki Clean Ocean Project

Suzuki Motor Corporation launched the “Suzuki Clean Ocean Project” in 2020 and has been working toward reducing the use of plastic in packaging materials. As a result, the amount of petroleum-based plastic used in the final packaging of outboard motors produced in Japan was 43 tons annually in FY2020, which was reduced to 6.3 tons annually by FY2023. The company aims to reduce this amount to zero by FY2026.

Suzuki Motors’ Commitment to the Environment

Beyond replacing polystyrene foam in the final packaging of its outboard motors, Suzuki has committed to converting packaging materials for all its products to environmentally-friendly options. The company will also continue to strive for reducing environmental impact by focusing efforts on environmentally-conscious initiatives. The move towards biodegradable packaging materials is a significant step in this direction.

The Biodegradable Polymer That Breaks Down in Seawater

Kaneka Corporation’s Green Planet is a biodegradable polymer that can decompose in seawater. It is made from 100% biomass-derived materials, which makes it an excellent alternative to petroleum-based plastics used in many product applications. In addition to being able to biodegrade, Green Planet also has comparable cushioning performance compared to conventional polystyrene foam. It is no wonder that Suzuki has chosen to use this material in the final packaging of its outboard motors.

Conclusion

Suzuki is taking a significant step in reducing its environmental impact by replacing polystyrene foam in the final packaging of its outboard motors with Kaneka Corporation’s biodegradable polymer, Green Planet. This move is part of the company’s commitment to reducing petroleum-based plastics used in its packaging materials and achieving zero use of these materials by FY2026. This announcement is an excellent example of a company striving for sustainability and environmentally conscious initiatives.
