Sailing Club Continues to Reign at Cultus Lake Even After 25 Years

Celebrating the Cultus Lake Sailing Club’s 25th Anniversary

The Cultus Lake Sailing Club, which was founded in 1999 by Christine Masson, Mark Isaak, Brian Smyth, and Bill and Kirstie Glasgow, proudly celebrated its 25th anniversary. The club has grown, with over 20 members and a fleet of 17 boats of various models. The Cultus Lake Sailing Club has certainly had its ups and downs.

A Successful Tenure

The Cultus Lake Sailing Club prides itself on being stronger than ever, with a successful tenure since its inception. The club has undeniably become an integral part of the Cultus Lake community over the past 25 years and has leased land adjacent to the group campsite at Cultus Lake Park with beach access.

Ups and Downs

Although the sailing club has had a successful tenure, it had its ups and downs. Co-founder Brian Smyth, who was also a Columbia Valley volunteer firefighter, passed away during a call back in 2015. He had been renovating an Enterprise-class boat, which he left to the club following his passing. Although his loss was a significant loss to the community, the club has since then bounced back and continued to thrive.

Community Participation

The club has become an integral part of the Cultus Lake community, and decorated sailboats have joined the lineup of floats during the Cultus Lake Day Parade for many years now. The club also welcomes new members through their various camps and club races, including their Level One and Two camps and Tuesday evening club races, as well as their Sunday social sails and races.

Cultus Lake Sailing Club Youth Programs

The Cultus Lake Sailing Club proudly offers youth programs for young sailors and, as of 2022, had the opportunity to compete in the B.C. Summer Games held in Prince George. The club’s young sailors learn to sail through Sail Canada’s CANSail program. Co-founder Christine Masson currently serves as the club’s training coordinator and head sailing instructor, and learned to sail at the UBC Sailing Club.

The club’s youth summer programs are run in small groups of up to 12 campers to allow Christine to adapt the content to the young sailors’ needs. “They start out sailing together on the boats,” said Masson. “But by their second year, they want to go out solo.”

Membership and Registration

If you are interested in joining the Cultus Lake Sailing Club and participating in their programs, more information about club membership and camp registration is available on their website. Their level one and two camps run from July 8-12, July 22-26, and Aug. 19-23. They also welcome new members to join their Tuesday evening club races and Sunday social sails and races.

Conclusion

The Cultus Lake Sailing Club is proud to celebrate its 25th anniversary, and even though it has had its ups and downs, the club has bounced back and become an integral part of the Cultus Lake community. The club continues to welcome new members through their various camps and club races and offers youth programs for young sailors.
