Bol d’Or Mirabaud 2021: A Fast, Strategic, and Intense Race
The Bol d’Or Mirabaud 2021 took place on Lake Geneva with a forecast of favourable winds, different from the light-aired editions in the past. The 66.5 nautical miles race had six TF35s lined up with over 400 boats and 3500 crew.
Third Victory for Yann Guichard
TF35 “Spindrift 2” helmed by Yann Guichard won the race securing his third Bol d’Or title. Yann highlighted the significance of this victory for him, “I’m thrilled to have won this race. It’s my third Bol d’Or Mirabaud, and our racing team’s fifth in fourteen editions, so it’s great.”
The race was fast, strategic, and intense with all six TF35s on foils from the start. In the first 30 minutes, “ZEN Too” led the fleet and “Ylliam 17” edged ahead till the centre of the lake, followed by the five other TF35s.
However, as expected on Lake Geneva, the wind disappeared at 1h 32m into the race, and the boats came to a halt. All the teams focussed on how to keep their boats moving and win the race.
A Good Feeling for the Winning Team
The “Spindrift 2” team won the Bol d’Or and the Geneve-Rolle, a significant achievement. For Guichard, this victory was emotional and satisfying, “We fought until the last minute. We’ve won the Bol d’Or and the Geneve-Rolle; it’s a full house and a good feeling.”
The unstable wind conditions put all the teams at their limits, and the transition was a challenge. Nonetheless, the teams worked together and pulled through.
Record for the Course Still Holds
The record of 5h01m for the 123-kilometre (66.5 nautical miles) course held since 1994 by the trimaran Triga IV still holds. Even with the favourable winds, the teams couldn’t break the record.
The race ended in a photo finish, “Sails of Change 8” won the race, followed by “Realteam Sailing” in second place. “Ylliam XII – Comptoir Immobilier” made a tactical move to stay further to the left and claim third, leaving “Ylliam 17” in fourth place, followed by “ZEN Too” in fifth. “Sails of Change 10” unfortunately did not finish the race.
The First Half of the Season has been Impressive
In an interview after the prize giving, Guichard praised his team, “With an unstable wind, we’re always at the limit. We weren’t far from capsizing at the moment of transition. The team did a great job.”
“Spindrift 2” tactician Xavier Revil also praised the team chemistry, “We owe it to the guys, who are really living well together. There is a great team spirit in this group. Everyone is putting themselves at the service of the team. “
The first half of the season has been impressive for “Spindrift 2,” and the team is looking forward to the next challenge.
