Sled and Gladiator Reign Victorious in Practice Races, Who will Claim the XS 52 SUPER SERIES Newport RI Trophy?

XS 52 SUPER SERIES Newport RI Trophy kicks off with sunny skies and strong winds

The second event of the 2024 52 SUPER SERIES season got off to a good start as Newport RI turned on both sun and wind for the official practice race day. The breezes look set to be in for the full week, according to some of the fleet’s top navigators. With conditions ideal for the final tune-up, two different boats won the practice races. Takashi Okura’s Sled from the historic host club, the New York Yacht Club, and Tony Langley’s Gladiator won the other race. The British owner, who is a club member, has enjoyed racing here for over five years.

Quantum Racing powered by American Magic and Sled team poised as main contenders

Quantum Racing hopes to go one better than their runners-up position at the season opener with their good form in the practice races. Sled team would also love to deliver on their owner-driver Takashi Okura’s club and they, too, will be contenders here. The circuit visits Newport for the first time ever, and strategist Ado Stead reported that the team is picking up where they left off at PalmaVela.

What it takes to win in Newport

Stead explains that to win in Newport, “You have to be open-minded here, sail with what you see. There is always something going on. We know that in this SW’ly breeze there are little shifts. Everyone has sailed here so many times. To win you just need to keep bashing away, keep going forwards, every meter, every top mark rounding, every bottom mark rounding, don’t give anything away and make it as hard as you can for the opposition.”

Other sailing events happening around the world

The third edition of the ORC Double-Handed World Championship 2024 commenced recently, hosted by the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club. The championship will see world titles in the double-handed sailing discipline contested in a 300 to 340-mile race on the legendary Skaw Racecourse.

The 2024 Finn World Masters finally got underway at the PuntAla Camp & Resort after years of waiting and preparation. In total, eight group races were sailed, in four fleets over two course areas, with Finns filling the Gulf of Follonica from one side to the other.

The 2024 Roschier Baltic Sea Race has already attracted an international alumni for the second edition of the 635nm offshore race. Starting on July 27, the race is held in almost continuous daylight of the Nordic Summer.

The Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) concluded recently after competitors and officials were seduced by a forecast of up to 8 knots on Port Phillip, but the breeze did not break 8 knots.

What is 52 SUPER SERIES?

The 52 SUPER SERIES is a top-level grand prix monohull racing circuit that was set up in 2012 by a group of passionate TP52 owners who shared the vision and drive to maintain a top-level arena for the fast, lightweight pure performance boats. The circuit is one of the few to represent the highest level of sailboat racing in real-time, while embracing the freedom to make design and technology choices.

The circuit has continued to thrive since its inception, with ten TP52s racing representing seven different nations, making it a globally inclusive event.

Final thoughts

The XS 52 SUPER SERIES Newport RI Trophy has so far been successful and filled with excitement, with top teams Quantum Racing and Sled poised as main contenders. With strong winds and sunny skies, the racing conditions have been favorable, with both teams and spectators eagerly awaiting the results.
