Men's Rowing 2nd Varsity Takes IRA Title with 1st Varsity in Third and Team Tying for Second

Tufts University Men’s Rowing Team Shines at 2024 Division III Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships

The Tufts University Men’s Rowing Team proved their mettle at the Division III Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships on June 1st, 2024, tying for second place out of eight teams. The IRA Championships were held at Mercer Lake, with the Jumbos winning the IRA Division III second varsity eight race and finishing third in the first varsity eight, which determines the DIII national champion. Tufts also tied for second place with Wesleyan University and Williams College in the Team Points Trophy, determined by the combined results of the first and second varsities.

Tufts Excels in Second Varsity Race

Tufts’ victory in the IRA Division III second varsity eight race was a testament to the team’s hard work and endurance. The race saw Tufts take off and win with a 5:55.100 time, ahead of second-place Trinity College’s 5:57. 414 mark and Williams at 5:57. 944. The Jumbos built their lead throughout the race, and maintained their comfortable margin of victory to finish strong.

Tufts’ First Varsity Places Third

The Tufts first varsity boat raced hard, achieving a third-place finish behind Wesleyan University and Williams College. The Jumbos came on strong late, pulling even with Trinity College through 1500 meters and passing the Bantams over the final 500 meters to take third with a 5:46. 580 time. This strong finish helped Tufts in the Team Points Trophy and was the team’s second Top 3 finish at IRA’s, including their runner-up finish in 2022.

Wesleyan Wins DIII National Championship

Wesleyan University won the IRA Division III National Championship with its 5:41. 530 time to win the first varsity eight, edging Williams (5:41. 737) by a narrow margin. Despite this loss, Tufts’ second varsity win and their team tying for second place were the best finishes for Tufts in those categories of their three IRA Championship appearances.

A Season of Wins for Tufts Men’s Program

This win at the IRA Championships capped off a strong season for the Tufts men’s rowing program. The team had a triumphant fall campaign with the first varsity’s win in the Collegiate Eights event out of 42 teams at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. They then went on to win the Points Trophy at the New England Rowing Championships (NERC) and place second at the National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC). The second varsity also won NERC and NIRC titles.

Final Thoughts

The Tufts University Men’s Rowing Team’s performance at the Division III Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships showed their dedication to the sport and their commitment to excellence. Their victories at the IRA Championships and the preceding races were a testament to their perseverance and skill. We look forward to seeing what they accomplish next.
