Marlow Ropes and Sustainable Sailing Partner to Build a Circular Economy for Boating Ropes

Marlow Ropes, a UK-based manufacturer of ropes for the recreational boating industry, has partnered with textile recycling startup Sustainable Sailing to ensure that base materials used in its manufacturing processes are recycled. The companies aim to bring about a shift in the traditional linear economy for boating ropes and create a circular economy, in which post-production waste is re-used, recycled and repurposed in an endless loop.

What is Sustainable Sailing?

Sustainable Sailing is a textile recycling start-up that reuses post-production waste rope and yarn. They use a unique Deecom steam process to recycle waste materials such as post-production, bio-based Dyneema- and HMPE PU-coated waste rope and yarns. The process breaks down the yarn materials and coatings which are then returned back to a polymer state for reuse.

Marlow Ropes’ Corporate Sustainability Goals

Marlow Ropes is partnering with Sustainable Sailing to help achieve its corporate sustainability goals. Joshua Barrass, R&D Projects Manager at Marlow Ropes, said: “The technical requirements that sailors and race teams require from a high-performance dinghy or yachting rope in today’s world demand complex cover blends, heating, and coating processes which have been difficult to strip out for recycling. Working with Sustainable Sailing is a key milestone for us — we now know the recycling technology is available and hope to increase capacity in time to expand and include end-of-life ropes.”

Closing the Loop: Towards Circular Economy

The collaboration between Marlow Ropes and Sustainable Sailing is a significant step towards closing the loop and creating a circular economy for high-performance ropes used in recreational boating. Recycling waste materials creates a sustainable and cost-efficient supply chain, reduces landfill waste, and cuts CO2 emissions. “We are delighted to have found a textile recycling partner for post-production PU coated bio- based Dyneema and HMPE yarn and rope, which brings us a step forward in the development of a circular economy for all bio-based Dyneema and HMPE constructed products,” Marlow said in a statement.

The Future of Marine Ecological Sustainability

In conclusion, the Marlow-Sustainable Sailing partnership is a testament to the forward-thinking approach towards boating practices, which will serve to minimize the negative impact of the marine sector on our planet. By partnering with Sustainable Sailing, Marlow Ropes is aiming for a sustainable future that values closed-loop production as well as the protection of our natural resources and ecology.
