Exploring the Majesty of the Sea with Omikron Yachts' 18m OT-60 - BOAT International

Omikron Yachts’ OT-60: A Perfect Blend of Sailing Lifestyle and Motor Boating

An Introduction to Omikron Yachts

Omikron Yachts is one of the youngest brands of Olympic Marine, a shipyard with a rich history of building and repairing sailing boats. Inspired by a calm sailing lifestyle, Omikron Yachts has successfully delivered its first production model, the OT-60, an 18.4-meter cruiser that blends the best of sailing and motor boating.

Taking the OT-60 for a Spin

Heading out for a sea trial on the OT-60 is not a decision to make lightly. The shipyard’s staff will warn you of stormy seas, making one wonder if they are up to the challenge of braving harsh waters. But as Holly Margerrison, a writer from a recreation magazine, came to find out, the yacht is more than capable of handling the sea’s uncertainties.

Climbing aboard from the stern, ticketed, she soon finds the OT-60 surprises her with its spaciousness. The cream and coffee colorways of the interior help to ease the mind, while the textured sofas, light wood surfaces, and butter-soft leather pilot seats invite one to sink in and relax.

Design Features

The yacht’s eco-cruise hull is a special feature customized by designer Juan Kouyoumdjian to lighten the composite material up to a third. The OT-60 consumes only 1.25 liters per mile and can cover an impressive 1000 nautical miles at a speed of eight knots, proving its eco-friendly capabilities.

The hull is vacuum-infused using an innovative construction technique to make it lightweight. The boat’s superstructure is also reinforced with carbon, helping to keep the yacht’s weight low. The lower center of gravity ensures the OT-60 works seamlessly with the sea while consuming less fuel.

The large windows that encircle the deckhouse ensure everyone on board experiences the beauty of the sea while offering 360-degree visibility. The aft saloon windows are retractable, creating a seamless transition between the indoor-outdoor areas of the yacht.

The Perfect Yacht for Sailing Enthusiasts

Omikron’s chairman, Nikolas Dendrinos, indicated that the OT-60 is an excellent choice for sailing enthusiasts who prefer a sailing lifestyle without all the hassle. The yacht is designed with a sailing mentality, and its similarity to sailing boats is evident in its movement and long bowsprit with an anchor pocket.

Unlike catamarans, the OT-60 is much better at weathering harsher seas. Its design offers a lot of space and volume, making it ideal for experienced motor boating enthusiasts and potential catamaran owners alike.

Final Thoughts

With three units already built, hull four nearing completion, and delivery scheduled for hulls five and six by year-end, it’s no wonder the OT-60 is a crowd favorite. It’s easy to handle and deceptively lightweight, making it an outstanding yacht for anyone who loves the sea. If Poseidon, the Greek God of the sea, thinks he still reigns supreme over the seas, he may have to think again. With the advent of Omikron Yachts’ OT-60, Poseidon has some stiff competition.
